Cash and a diamond ring worth an estimated Rs 10 lakh were stolen from the Sector 15 house of MPS Chawla, a former nominated councillor of the Municipal Corporation.

Chawla suspects two domestic helps, whom he hired recently, behind the incident. They have been rounded up by the police. A case of theft has been registered and the two are being interrogated by the police.

Chawla told Chandigarh Tribune he hung his trousers on the door of the almirah and slept at 1.30 am. When he woke up at 7.30 am, he was surprised to see his trousers missing from there. He checked with his family members and the maids who expressed ignorance about it.

He had kept his purse in the trousers that contained nearly Rs 60,000 that went missing. Having looked around, he found that his wife’s bag was also missing. Her purse had about Rs 25,000-30,000 in cash along with a diamond ring worth Rs 10 lakh. Driving licences along with other documents were also kept there in their respective purses.

“There are guards and two dogs. There are CCTV cameras installed in front of the house and not at the rear. No glass or door has been broken to forge entry, so it seems to be the handiwork of some insider. My other maids have been with us for many years, but we recently hired two girls for work, so I suspect them,” added Chawla.
