Chandigarh, May 21

The Union Ministry of Power has increased the unallocated quota of electricity for Chandigarh from 10 per cent to 14 per cent.

The decision comes as a relief for the city residents as the demand for power is going up day by day. The demand reached 350 MW on Monday, which is the highest of the season.

With the increase in the quota, the UT will get around 40 MW more electricity. The Administration is presently getting 100 MW from the unallocated quota, which will now increase to 140 MW. Besides, the Administration gets 260 MW fixed power from different sources.

The UT does not have a power generation plant of its own. The electricity department purchases power after signing agreements with power trading companies, including Power Trading Corporation, GMR Energy and JSW Energy and NTPC plants etc.

Last year, the Union ministry had increased the UT quota from 6 per cent to 10 per cent.
