Chandigarh, January 18

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has written to the SP (Traffic) to challan rehri and rickshaws plying in the city without a licence.

The letter was written by MC Joint Commissioner Karnail Singh. Similar directions were issued to the MC enforcement wing to check licences of rickshaw-pullers and take action accordingly.

A senior MC official said for the first offence, a fine of Rs 300 would be levied, for the second offence, Rs 400 would have to be paid while for the third offence, the violator would have to shell out Rs 500.

Last year, the Chandigarh Administration had notified the Chandigarh Cycle, Rickshaw and Loading Rehri (Regulation and Control) Bylaws.

According to the bylaws, the registration certificate, driving licence and number plates have been made compulsory for rickshaws and rehris in the city. Regarding the eligibility for driving a rickshaw or a rehri, the driver should be above 18 years of age, besides being a bona fide resident of Chandigarh.

Political pressure came in way of drive last year

Similar directions were issued last year by former MC Joint Commissioner Virender Chaudhary and 47 rickshaws were also impounded. However, in June, former Mayor Arun Sood had stopped the drive and rickshaws were released without imposing any penalty.
