Four months after the murder of Aikom Singh Dhillon, charges of murder, criminal conspiracy and tampering with evidence were framed against the victim’s wife, Seerat Kaur, by a local court today.

The trial will run in a fast-track court now. Hearings in the case will take place on August 17, 18 and 19.

The local court framed charges under Sections 302, 120-B, 201 and 34 of the IPC and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act against 36-year-old Seerat Kaur, who had allegedly shot dead her husband Aikom Singh Dhillon (40) with .9-mm pistol at her residence at Phase 3B1 on the night of March 19.

Seerat Kaur, who was present in the court today, kept her calm during the court proceedings. Defence counsel Manjinder Singh Brar pleaded that his client was not guilty. Earlier, Seerat Kaur had kept changing her statements in the court. After confessing to her crime, she later changed her stance and stated that Aikom had committed suicide.

With the framing of charges under Section 120-B against her, the role of Seerat Kaur’s mother Jaswinder Kaur and her brother Vivek Partap Singh has again come under the scanner. Both had joined police investigation earlier, but the police did not arrest the duo. In the 256-page chargesheet, the police have given the name of 54 witnesses. The prime witnesses included auto driver Tul Bahadur, who had informed the police after seeing blood oozing out of the bag in which Aikom’s body was stuffed after his murder. Seerat had allegedly sought the help of Tul Bahadur for putting the bag in her BMW car on March 20. Besides, the other prime witnesses include Gurniwaz Singh, son of the couple who was present at the house at the time of the incident, Parul Rani and Kamlesh Kumar, employees of the salon where Seerat had gone after allegedly committing the crime, and Jagir Singh, manager of Gurdwara Amb Sahib, where she had left her bag, containing blood-stained clothes and slippers.

The police have recovered the murder weapon, a .9-mm pistol. Mohali SSP Kuldeep Singh Chahal had claimed that the bullet was fired from the weapon. He had cited the forensic report in support of his claim. The chargesheet, which was filed in the court by the police on June 15, also has details of the pistol and the CCTV footage of the salon.
