An accused declared proclaimed offender (PO) in a cheating case registered in 1999 surrendered in a local court today.
The then SHO of Mullanpur, Sarabjeet Singh, and his wife Sukhjinder Kaur were booked for cheating and criminal conspiracy. While Sarabjeet was arrested, tried and acquitted in 2008, Sukhjinder Kaur had fled to New Zealand and was declared a PO.
As per the case registered at the Sector 39 police station, the duo had allegedly forged documents and obtained case property for personal use. When the police raided their residence, the case property was recovered.
A case under Sections 420, 467, 468, 411 and 120-B of the IPC was registered against the duo. While Sarabjeet was arrested, Sukhjinder went to New Zealand and remained there. In May 2008, Sarabjeet was acquitted by court due to lack of evidence. However, he was asked to pay Rs 65,000 bail bonds.
A few days ago, Sukhjinder appeared in a Fatehgarh Sahib court in a case. She then approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court and filed an application to quash the FIR. The HC told her to first surrender in court, which she did today. She also filed her bail application in court.
The police station concerned was informed and its personnel reached the court and demanded her judicial custody, as recoveries had already been made in the case. The court granted bail to Kaur and asked her to deposit Rs 65,000 bail bonds for the same.
