Taking note of the poor pass percentage of government schools in the CBSE Class X exams results, the UT Education Department has decided to issue show-cause notices to the principals and the teachers of the schools.

Sources said the decision had been taken in a meeting of high-level officers here on Wednesday. Besides issuing the notices, the department has also decided to link annual confidential reports (ACRs) of the teachers and principals  with the results, but the pattern of the ACRs will be changed to the score-based system.

Sources said the department may suspend some of the teachers if it was established that they were not performing their duties properly. An officer of the department said the teachers were getting good salary and it was their duty to put in their best efforts while teaching students.

This is for the first time that the pass percentage of government schools is down to 48.51 per cent, while it was 94.7 per cent last year.

The pass percentage of Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS), Sector 38 (West), Chandigarh, was just 7.94 in Class X — worst among the government schools. There were 126 students in Class X and only 10 passed. Similarly, other schools had also put up a poor show.

Government Model High School (GMHS), Sector 22, Chandigarh, had 37 students in Class X, of whom just three have passed. The pass percentage was 8.11, implying that close to 92 per cent students could not pass.

Sources said the lists of the principals have been prepared and the notices to the principals and the teachers will be issued from Monday.
