A Class XII student of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 27, allegedly punched a teacher today in an inebriated condition. The victim, Neelam Sharma, a resident of Sector 27, is a Sarv Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) teacher.

According to the DDR, Neelam alleged that the student punched her during the recess in the school where other teachers were also present. “I bled profusely through the nose. He hit me under the influence of alcohol,” she said in her statement to the police.

She said, “The incident has left me terrified as he threatened me in front of Veena Kumari, a co-worker.”

According to the DDR, she was taken for a medical examination to the Civil Hospital, Mani Majra.

The SSA Teachers Welfare Association demanded the registration of an FIR against the student under Section 353 of the the IPC.

“I was a day teacher today. The boy was either under the influence of alcohol or some drug. I asked him to go to his class as he was sitting in the other wing. He refused and then I complained to the principal. The boy then ran away. I gave in writing that he misbehaved with me and his name should be struck off. His parents were called too,” said Neelam.

She said, “As all these things were going on, he emerged again and threatened me. Then he punched me in the face. I went unconscious for 15 to 20 minutes.”

Father apologises

“My son hasn’t reached home yet. He must be afraid. I was called by the school on Thursday. I couldn’t talk to the teacher concerned. Our whole family apologises to the teacher. I will guide my son. They can beat me up for my son’s offence,” said the student’s father, Subodh Jha. “The teacher doesn’t speak nicely to my son. He is being called a drug addict. She shouldn’t talk to him like this. My son only speaks a lot. However, he doesn’t take drugs or alcohol,” he said.

DEO seeks report from school

District Education Officer (DEO) Anujit Kaur said, “We have sought a report from the school. The student must be immediately suspended. However, he should be reformed. His parents have been called on Friday.”
