A “world-class” home for senior citizens is coming up in Mohali. The Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, has asked the Housing and Urban Development Department to allot the requisite land to a Mumbai-based NGO, the Nana Nani Foundation, which will develop, operate and maintain a complex, “The Oyster”, comprising residences for senior citizens.

The Oyster project is a holistic approach as it is based on the three pillars of home, hospitality and healthcare.

Confirming the development, Additional Chief Secretary, Housing, Urban Development and Revenue, Vini Mahajan told The Tribune that a 3-acre site had been identified in Mohali for allotment to the NGO on a lease basis as per government norms.

The managing trustees of the Nana Nani Foundation, a public charity trust, Shhyam R Singhania and Neeta Padaam Singhania, had called upon Capt Amarinder during his recent Mumbai visit and submitted him a detailed proposal to develop a senior living home and centre for living excellence for older adults to herald the tricity as a destination of choice for senior citizens.

Accepting the proposal, the Chief Minister asked the Housing and Urban Development Department to provide the requisite land to the trust, which has been promoting and aiding in the enrichment of the lives of the elderly for the past 16 years.

According to the proposal, the foundation, which strives for the cause and care of the elderly by providing constant and innovative recreational programmes through the creation and maintenance of “Nana Nani parks” in Mumbai, will build residences and integrated holistic wellness and living excellence centres for older adults for successful ageing.

It will provide primary healthcare services to the poor and the elderly population in rural and urban areas.

Besides developing trans-generational designs catering to senior citizens, the proposed facility will also provide skill development and employment opportunities for older adults and persons with disabilities.

“We request that a small space be given to us with basic infrastructure of water, electricity, connectivity and all municipal clearances. We will develop, operate and maintain a complex, “The Oyster”, comprising residences for senior citizens,” the foundation stated in its representation to the Chief Minister.

The foundation told the Chief Minister that The Oyster project was envisioned as a social impact venture, meant to generate revenue for its own sustainability.

“We request you to study our initiative with a view to granting us land, which will help put the tricity on the world map as a choice destination for older adults to live a life full of joy, fun and peace,” the Singhanias urged Capt Amarinder Singh.
