The revenue has also gone down to around Rs 8.47 crore as compared to Rs 10.20 crore in 2015.

As per the statistics of the Chandigarh Traffic Police, a total of 2,47,508 challans were issued to traffic violators for various offences till November 30.

Out of the total, 52,697 challans have been issued for jumping the red light, 14,497 for driving without seat belt and 34,207 for driving without helmet.

A total of 4,569 challans have been issued for drunken driving, which is more than last year when 3,447 persons were challaned for the same offence.

The challans for overspeeding in the city has witnessed a major dip with only12,682 challans been issued in comparison to 28,096 last year.

The challans this year has generated a revenue of Rs 8,47,16, 306 crore for the UT Police which is around Rs 1.73 crore lesser than last year when the police department generated a revenue of Rs 10,20,49,422 crore.

A police official said rising awareness about traffic rules was a reason behind the dip in the number of challans. “People are more cautious as they are aware that traffic cops are stationed at all major intersections and light points,” official added.

Sources said the traffic staff was also directed not to stop any outstation vehicle unless any traffic violation is witnessed, which has also led to lesser challans this year.
