Former Union Minister and senior BJP leader Harmohan Dhawan’s NGO, the Jan Kalyan Manch, today stated that if effective steps were not taken to check the stray dog menace in the city, then his NGO would catch the stray dogs and release them in the residences of the officers concerned of the UT Administration and the Municipal Corporation.

Harmohan Dhawan said at present the MC had miserably failed to solve the stray dog menace,so, he had decided that if the MC in coming days would not do anything effective, then his NGO would take charge and catch these stray dogs and leave them in the houses of the officials concerned.

Dhawan added that in 2012 the population of stray dogs in the city was 8500, it is claimed by the officers that sterilisation of 8,600 dogs was done in the past two years. Despite of all efforts, the stray dog population had gone up to about 16,000. About 70 dog-bite cases are being reported daily in Sector 19 and 38 dispensaries. The sterilisation programme is merely on papers, Dhawan said.

He also said, “No one was responsible in the city and there was no accountability. Most of the officers come from the remote cities of Punjab and Haryana on deputation. Chandigarh is a heaven for them and they enjoy life here. They have no commitment and involvement in the welfare of the people. They know under worst circumstances, the maximum punishment can be repatriation to their parent state. So, the NGO will carry out the work for the welfare of the people and will also teach lesson to these officers, Dhawan added.
