CHANDIGARH: Over 130 doctors from the tricity, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi, along with nearly 70 thalassaemic patients and their relatives attended a continuous medical education (CME) programme here.

Chandigarh: Over 130 doctors from the tricity, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi, along with nearly 70 thalassaemic patients and their relatives attended a continuous medical education (CME) programme here. The CME was organised by the Paediatric Haematology-Oncology Unit, APC, PGIMER, along with the Thalassaemic Children Welfare Association, Chandigarh. The meeting deliberated upon the management practices in thalassaemia, which is an inherited disorder and afflicts about 10,000 children in India every year, concentrating on holistic management that includes regular blood transfusions and chelation therapy. Experts from Delhi and Chandigarh (Dr VK Khanna from Ganga Ram Hospital, Dr J Chandra from Kalwati Saran, Dr Gomber from Guru Teg bahadur Hospital, Dr Amita Mahajan from Apollo Hospital, along with Dr Amita Trehan and Dr Deepak Bansal from the PGI) highlighted the need for regular adequate transfusion at the interval of 20-25 days and proper chelation therapy for the disease.

Health seminar

As many as 110 women teachers from different schools of the tricity attended a health seminar on women-related health issues at Max Super Speciality Hospital (MSSH), Mohali. On the occasion, Sandeep Dogra, VP and Zonal Head, Max Hospitals, Punjab, Dr Sudheer Saxena, Director and Head, Cardiology Department, Dr NM Gupta, Director, Department of Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery, and Dr Seema Wadhwa, Senior Consultant, Gynaecologist and Laparoscopy Specialist, educated the teachers on a variety of issues related to women’s health. — TNS
