A huge quantity of chemical rubber meant for pasting astroturf field at the Sports Complex, Sector 42, and a charcoal mixing machine were gutted in a fire that broke out here today. However, there was no casualty.

According to the Fire Department officials, around 15 packets of chemical rubber worth lakhs, along with the machine, were destroyed in the fire. The Fire Department received the call at around 2.19 pm, following which two fire tenders and a water boozer were rushed to the spot.

A firefighter said the machine in which charcoal was prepared caught fire due to overheating. The fire engulfed the machine and spread further sending packets of chemical rubber, which were lying nearby, aflame. “The fire was controlled immediately and no casualties were reported,” said a firefighter.

However, according to eyewitnesses, the fire occurred due to a spark at the spot where welding work for raising grills was on.

It is learnt that ten tonnes of chemical rubber were kept in packets and were gutted. The loss due to the fire is yet to be estimated.
