High-decibel music troubles students

Despite clear directions of the Supreme Court that high-decibel music cannot be played after 10 pm, students in Patiala are fighting a lone war against loud music played at parties in various parts of the city as their complaints regarding the same have gone unheard.

Loud music at parties continues unabated in the city even as students prepare for their examinations during night hours.

Flouting Supreme Court ruling is a common practice and the police and Patiala administration are lax in taking any action against the menace.

“Almost every night our sleep is disturbed due to such parties playing loud music. Nuisance created by high-decibel music is something against the apex court directions and what is more shocking is the fact that no action has been taken against the guilty  in such incidents,” claimed Supreet Singh, a student.

“On Friday night, music was being played at a party in the Civil Lines area till the wee hours,” he said.

Meanwhile on Saturday, loud music continued to trouble residents in the Charan Bagh, Lehal Colony and Shera Wala Gate areas as wedding and religious functions were held in these areas.

“We cannot study in night due to such religious functions. In the wee hours also, religious processions taken out in the city disturbs our study,” said Munish, a student at a private college in the city.

A few students told The Tribune that the matter was serious as its examination time and they could not study at night due to the menace.

“It seems there is no authority in the city to implement the law. Ironically, the authorities will either try to pacify or pressure the common man to step back from his legal right and demand,” they said, claiming that the Deputy Commissioner and the SSP must ensure that law was not violated by a few individuals in the name of celebrations.

“We will not let such things happen anymore and now, I would personally monitor incidents like these and take strict action against persons who will be found violating the norms,” said officials.
