Chandigarh, January 23

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation will install LED street lights in the city on a revenue sharing model with Energy Efficient Services Limited (EESL), which has been designated as implementing agency by the Union Government.

The agenda in this regard will be discussed in MC House tomorrow. The new LED lights will have dimming feature between midnight and 4 am when there is less movement on roads and an intelligent light monitoring system, energy savers and centralised server.

The proposal of a distress button was dropped because of cost involving the feature, a civic body  official said.

An MC official added that at present, the total energy consumed per annum was approximately 2, 31, 33,710 KWh.

“At present, the total electricity bill amounts to Rs 12.64 crore annually. The conversion of these lights into energy efficient LED street lights will lead to

saving in energy consumption up to 50-60 per cent,” he said.

There are around 52,000 street lights in the city, which will be replaced under the ambitious Smart City project of the Union Government.
