Tension mounts high in Baltana as even after 18 hours, the police were clueless about the identity of the assailants who shot dead Ajay Jain (35), owner of Jain Mobile Centre, in the busy market here on Thursday night.

Police sources said the shooting incident seemed to be the case of an old enmity, but they were yet to find out the reason behind it. Though the police have registered a case against three unidentified motorbike assailants and have started investigations, no arrest was made till the filing of this report. The police on Friday morning also procured the CCTV footage of the crime spot as to what exactly happened on Thursday night, but could not get any clue.

Despite the police boasting of its high-end technology and “able officers” adept in solving cases, the incident has left them grappling in the dark with the miscreants having the last laugh.

It seems the law and order situation is taking a turn for the worse with each passing day. The way miscreants fled the spot after opening fire in the busy market area, raised question over the high alert being observed by the police.

Though police officials have claimed that they are trying to nab all accused and investigations are progressing in the right direction, their efforts are yet to yield any results.

“It is indeed a cause of worry. What security do we have if miscreants can open fire and escape freely,” said some locals.

Purushottam Bal, DSP, Dera Bassi: said: “Investigation is on and nothing concrete has come out so far. We have taken up the case as a challenge. We are taking all possible steps to solve the case at the earliest.”

Post-mortem conducted

The post-mortem of Ajay Jain was conducted at the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, on Friday. According to sources, a panel of three doctors was set up to conduct his post-mortem.

One of the doctors said it seems the assailants had used country-made pistol as the size of the bullet was more than the normal. It took an hour to take out the bullet.
