Chandigarh: The cyber crime investigation cell of the UT police has arrested Harvinder Singh, a native of Rajasthan, who, along with others, had cheated a city resident of Rs 42 lakh on the pretext of investing in insurance policies. He was arrested on April 25 and is on two-day police remand. Ravinder Singh Grewal had complained that he was cheated by a gang of fraudsters. The victim gave the names of the accused following which a case was registered at the Sector 34 police station on April 12. The police said one of the bank accounts was found in the name of Club India, 612, Vishal Tower, Janakpuri, Delhi, whose proprietor was Tajendra Singh. The police had arrested Tajendra, a resident of Noida, on April 15. Another bank account in which Rs 7 lakh was deposited was found in the name of Money Solutions whose proprietor was Harvinder Singh (39), a resident of Sriganganagar, Rajasthan. TNS

Hit by car, 5 women injured

Zirakpur: Five women sustained injuries when they were allegedly hit by a rashly-driven car at Dayalpura village on Tuesday evening. The police have registered a case. The injured were rushed to the GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, from where one of them was referred to the PGI in a critical condition. The incident occurred around 8 pm when the victims had gone out for an evening walk. The car driver fled from the spot. Those injured are Kanta Rani (50), Siam Kaur (52), Balbir Kaur (64), Gurmeet Kaur (52) and Saroj Bala (55). OC

Sena leader booked for extortion

Kharar: The police have booked Amit Sharma, a senior leader of the Shiv Sena, on a charge of extortion and wrongfully restraining Tarsem Singh, a resident of Chhajjumajra Colony, Kharar. Tarsem Singh alleged that Sharma demanded a monthly payment of Rs 50,000 from him as he was into the business of sending people abroad. The accused threatened that he had links with senior police officers and a case would be registered against the complainant. He alleged that in February this year, the accused took Rs 8,700 from him. Man jumps before train, dies

Zirakpur: An unidentified man believed to be in his mid-30s allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a train near Gazipur Sanian village on Tuesday. GRP officials said they got information around 8 pm that a man had committed suicide. The police reached the spot and took the body into their custody. The police could not identify the body. A case has been registered. OC

Scooter taken away forcibly

Chandigarh: An Activa scooter and Rs 5,000 were reportedly snatched from a Mohali resident near Motor Market, Sector 38 (West), on Wednesday evening. Sources said complainant Ramandeep alleged that someone snatched white Activa scooter and cash from him. The sources said the Activa scooter was snatched at knifepoint. After getting information, the police rushed to the spot. An investigation has been initiated at the Maloya police station. TNS

Man booked for eve-teasing

Chandigarh: An Ambala resident has been booked for eve-teasing and threatening a former friend at the Industrial Area, Phase I, here. According to the police, the victim, a resident of Faidan village, alleged that the accused eve-teased and threatened her near Verka Canteen in the Industrial Area. Sources said the accused works at a mall in the Industrial Area and is known to the victim. A case under Sections 354-A (sexual harassment) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the accused at the Industrial Area police station and an investigation has been initiated. Liquor vend sold for Rs 2.73 cr

Chandigarh: The Excise and Taxation Department has once again failed to auction all liquor vends on Wednesday. Out of the 11 vends, only one vend was sold for Rs 2.73 crore. The department has put remaining vends on the auction after reducing the reserve price after it failed to get them auctioned in earlier occasions. The department has received Rs 208 crore from the auction of vends so far. TNS
