Patiala: A huge “hutch diverticulectomy” with re- implantation of the right ureter (pipe draining urine into the bladder reservoir) into the re-constructed urinary bladder surgery lasting about four hours was performed by Dr Rajan Soni on a 62-year-old male patient. “Hutch diverticulum” is a rare congenital entity seen in children mostly. It results from congenital failure of normal muscle development around ureteral orifice, said Dr Soni. A small amount of bladder membrane herniates through the muscle defect and keeps enlarging incorporating the ureteral orifice into the diverticulum. According to Dr Soni, the pressure effect of huge diverticulum (10x5 cm) impacted in the pelvis led to damaging effect on the right kidney and if not operated, it could lead to atrophy of kidney, besides spontaneous rupture of diverticulum with fatal consequences. The patient is recovering fast. — TNS
