Chandigarh, April 26

Under the Smart City project, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation will provide two dustbins to residents to segregate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.

The project is being launched on the directions of the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) under the Smart City project. The project will be started next month.

A senior MC official said they would provide two dustbins to every household in city for the segregation of garbage. There would be expenditure of around Rs 3 crore on the project and the MoUD would give 30 per cent subsidy on the project. If the MC General House agreed to pay for the entire project, then these dustbins would be provided to the city residents free of cost. Otherwise, the MC would charge Rs 90 (cost is Rs 120) for two bins and the amount would be included in the water bill.

The MC would encourage the residents to dump biodegradable garbage and non-biodegradable waste in separate bins. Thereafter, the MC staff will lift the garbage.

The project will help in the proposal disposal of garbage and recycling of garbage, an official said.

Mayor Asha Jaswal said the project would be launched on May 5 and she would also inform Prime Minister Narendra Modi about this project at the Chandigarh airport from where the PM would leave for Shimla tomorrow.
