As many as 13 women were injured after the roof of the first floor of a house caved in during a condolence ceremony at Jaspur village of Raipur Rani this morning.

Of the 13 women, eight received fractures, while five escaped with minor injuries. They were taken to the General Hospital, Sector 6, here. Later, two of them were referred to the PGI, Chandigarh, following multiple fractures.

The police received a call at 9:30 am. Following this, a police team reached the spot.

The police said three women suffered fractures in their spinal cord, three in hand and two suffered fractures in leg. Two women, who were referred to the PGI,

have been identified as Seema Devi (32) and Basso Devi (65).

Village sarpanch Poonam Sharma said the roof was a temporary structure built using outdated methods, which led to its collapse.

The ceremony was held to mark the 13th day after the death of a local resident. Around 30 people had gathered for the same. The roof supposedly could not take the weight and collapsed. None of the women had received a life-threatening injury, said Poonam.
