Zirakpur: Three youths, in their mid-20s, died when a tractor-trailer they were riding was hit by a rashly-driven car on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway on Friday morning.



Zirakpur: Three youths, in their mid-20s, died when a tractor-trailer they were riding was hit by a rashly-driven car on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway on Friday morning. The deceased have been identified as Pardeep Kumar and Rajesh Kumar and Sham Singh, all residents of Sundran village near Dera Bassi. Pardeep and Rajesh died on the spot while Sham Singh was rushed to the Civil hospital, Dera Bassi, where he succumbed to his injuries this afternoon. The police have registered a case against the driver of the car, Sandeep Mahajan, a resident of Zirakpur. tns

Two die in hit-&-run

Chandigarh: In two cases of hit-and-run, an unknown person was killed after being hit by an unidentified vehicle on the road separating Sectors 9 and 17 and a woman riding an Activa, died after an unknown vehicle hit her scooter near Maloya on Friday. In the first case, the victim was rushed to the PGI, where he died on Friday. A case had been registered. In the second case, Jaswinder Kaur (52) riding an Activa scooter died after her vehicle was hit near Maloya on Friday. A case has been been registered. TNS

Vehicle location system 

Chandigarh:Punjab Governor and UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore on Friday launched the automatic vehicle location system (AVLS) of the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) at the Punjab Raj Bhawan.  Envisaged in September 2016 and completed in January 2017s, the project provides live positioning of all 130 inter-state buses. It also gives the expected time of arrival (ETA) as well as departure of for all bus stops All information is available through an Android-based mobile app, CTU Bus Tracker, which is available free of cost on Google Play Store. Chandigarh: VP Singh Badnore, Governor of Punjab and UT Administrator, rooted for the inclusion of human rights as a subject in the school curriculum. “Government, judiciary, statutory bodies like the National Commission and civil society should do their utmost for the promotion and protection of human rights. We must increase awareness about it by including it as a subject in the school curriculum,” said Badnore.He was speaking at a regional workshop for northern India on good governance, development and human rights, which was jointly organised by the National Human Rights Commission and the UT. Justice HL Dattu, chairperson and other members of the National Human Rights Commission, were also present on the occasion. TNS  

Motorcyclist dies in mishap

Chandigarh: A 24-year-old motorcyclist, a native of Ropar, died on Thursday after the motorcycle he was riding on lost balance on the road separating Sectors 33 and 45. Sources said the victim had been identified as Sukhwinder Singh.The incident took place when the victim was returning to Ropar from his uncle’s house in Sector 45.The police said the victim was carrying two bags on the motorcycle due to which he lost the balance and fell on the road. A police team also visited and examined the spot. The injured was rushed to the PGI where he later succumbed to the injuries on Thursday night. The police have initiated inquest proceedings into the matter at the Sector 34 police station. TNS

Mobile phone, cash snatched

Chandigarh: Four youths riding a motorcycle snatched a cellphone and money from a man at Sector 49 here on Thursday night. Sources said the victim, identified as Uma Shankar, was targeted near a park in Sector 49. The assailants, riding on a motorcycle, stopped the victim, threatened him and snatched his cellphone and money. The accused managed to flee from the spot. An investigation has been initiated by the police at the Sector 49 police station. TNS

Sodomy: Two get 7-year jail 

Mohali: A local court on Friday pronounced seven-year sentence to two persons in a case of sodomy of a minor boy. The court of Mohali Sessions Judge sent the accused Rakesh Kumar Rocky and Pinky from Uttarakhand to seven year imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000 each. In case, the accused failed to pay the fine, their jail term would be extended by two months, ordered the court. The accused had sodomised a nine-year-old boy, who was working at a dhaba in Kharar, in 2013. Both the accused were also working at the same dhaba then. The police had registered a case under Sections 377 and 34 of the IPC and under various sections of the POCSO Act on the complaint of the victim’s father at the Kharar police station.  TNS

Two drug peddlers arrested

Mohali: The police nabbed two drug peddlers and recovered 112 gram heroin from their possession. The car they were riding on was also impounded. The accused have been identified as Naresh from Ambala and Sanju, a resident of a village near Panchkula. The police said both accused (both in their mid-20s) were travelling in a Ford Figo car, when they were intercepted at a naka, laid at Phase XI, here. During the search, a packet containing 112 gm heroin was recovered from the car. The police said both accused were unemployed. “Investigations are on to find as to who were their clients and from where they got the contraband”, said the police. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered. Both accused were produced in a local court and sent to three-day police custody.  TNS

Ram Darbar resident acquitted

Chandigarh: A Ram Darbar resident was acquitted in a culpable homicide not amounting to murder case in which he pushed his fellow colleague who died having fallen on road. According to the case, Abhishek and Ajay were playing an instrument during a marriage function in 2016. They had an argument over some issue following which Abhishek pushed Ajay. His head hit the road and he died. As complainant in this case turned hostile, he was acquitted. TNS

Special lecture on traffic rules

During the NSS camp at the Asian Educational Institute, Patiala, Inspector Hardeep Singh Badungar and his team visited the campus. The camp is being organised under the supervision of program officer, Gurdeep Kaur. As many as 60 NSS volunteers participated in the lecture. Badungar's main motive to visit the college campus was to make students aware of traffic rules. ASI Gurjap Singh, In-charge, Traffic Education Cell, Patiala, said the traffic police was working as a friend of masses and people should voluntarily follow the traffic rules. 

Academic tour for students

A one-day academic tour was organised by Khalsa College, Patiala, for students of BSc Agriculture. The students visited the Centre of Excellence for Vegetables, Indo-Israel Project, Gharaunda, Karnal. Dr Satinder Yadav, Deputy Director, Horticulture Department, informed the students about the history, extension work taken by the institution in seedlings of vegetables, organic farming, vermi-compost, farm yard manure and various poly-houses research programmes.
