Truck catches fire

Panchkula: A tragedy was averted after a truck caught fire near Gorakhnath village of Pinjore on Wednesday. Short circuit in the battery of the truck is said to be the reason behind the fire. Driver Sukhwinder Singh escaped unhurt and tried to douse the fire with the help of nearby people. He failed to do so. A fire tender had to be called from Baddi which took about half an hour to douse the flames. The truck was carrying gas cylinders, which were damaged. TNS

Man caught with poppy husk

Panchkula: The police caught a man with 280 grams of poppy husk near the road dividing Sectors 22-23 on Wednesday. A police patrolling party saw a man trying to avoid them. Following which, they started following him. The man threw a packet away. During inspection, it was found to be poppy husk. Accused Gurdeep Singh, a resident of Dera Bassi and a truck driver by possession, was arrested under Section 15 of the NDPS Act. TNS

One held with 10gm heroin

Dera Bassi: The police on Wednesday arrested a drug peddler with 10 grams of heroin from his possession. Two of his accomplices gave the police a slip. The accused has been identified as Daljeet Singh, a resident of Ropar. According to police sources, the police party got secret information about the alleged activities of the accused. The sources said Daljeet, along with his two accomplices, was on its way towards Dera Bassi to deliver the consignment, following which a naka was laid near Janetpur village. The police said on seeing the naka, two accomplices travelling along with Daljeet Singh managed to flee from the spot, while Daljeet was arrested with 10 grams of heroin. The police have registered a case under the NDPS Act and started investigation. OC

Protest against dumping ground

Kharar: Residents of nearby Bhukri village on Wednesday protested against the proposed move of the Kharar Municipal Council to set up a dumping ground in the common land of the village. A team, led by Anju Chandar, president of the Kharar Municipal Council, and Kul Bhusan Goyal, Executive Officer of the council, reached the spot along with revenue officers for the demarcation of the land where they are planning to set up a dumping ground. As the news spread in the area, villagers, including women, gathered at the spot and opposed the move. Among others, two Municipal Councillors - Darshan Singh Shivjot, Major Singh - and the villagers said they would never allow the council to set up dumping ground here. They said dumping ground would spread foul smell in the area and it would be difficult for them to live near the dumping ground. Due to the protest, the MC team had to return back. OC
