Chandigarh, January 22

While the Municipal Corporation authorities are claiming that water is safe to drink, panicked residents from other areas are coming with complaints of contaminated water in Sector 18.

Besides Sector 18 B, C and D, residents of Sector 18 A also came forward toady with the complaints of contaminated water being supplied to their houses.

The MC staff checked water in the houses of Anil Bhutani and IM Kaushal in Sector 18 A after they complained they were getting muddy water in the municipal supply.

The residents said their family members and servants had taken ill after consuming contaminated water. Meanwhile, the MC authorities replaced water pipelines at a few houses. The pipeline was found leaking due to rusting.

Chief Engineer of the MC NP Sharma claimed their teams of officers were checking all houses. He said there was no case of municipal water getting mixed with sewage in underground pipes. Leakage in the pipeline behind a showroom at Sector 18 was plugged. The leakage had led to mixing of mud in water supply.

The entire pipeline was flushed and all sewerage and storm-water lines were also checked. He said the teams were conducting a check in the entire sector.

Meanwhile, Harinder Kaur, a resident, said all her family members had taken ill. Subhash, another resident, said he had stopped drinking water from the municipal supply and bought packaged water from the market.
