A constable of the Chandigarh Police, Anand Kumar, was today sentenced to life imprisonment for shooting his wife dead at the GMSH, Sector 16, three years ago. He will also pay a fine of Rs 10,000. After shooting his wife with his 9 mm service pistol, he attempted suicide, but survived.

Following a marital dispute, the then 41-year-old Kumar had shot his wife four times on July 25, 2014, inside the hospital. He had then fired at himself but was saved by doctors. His 36-year-old wife Dimple worked in the hospital as a Class IV employee and had died on the spot.

In all, seven shots were fired. While five shots were fired by him at his wife Dimple, four of which hit her, Kumar fired two shots at himself. One shot that missed Dimple accidentally hit a visitor, Savitri, who had come for her daughter’s treatment to the hospital.

The couple had been married for 10 years at the time and had nine-year-old twins, a girl and a boy. The couple was having strained relations and was living separately for the past two months. They had also filed for divorce. A complaint was filed by Dimple at the women cell and she was living with her parents at that time.

Kumar, who hails from UP, had joined the UT police in 2003. He was posted as a gunman with a High Court Judge. He was in his uniform on the fateful day and had later said that his wife’s family was interfering in his married life.
