Three policemen, including the SHO of the Sector 36 police station and the Sector 61 police post in-charge, were injured and two police vehicles damaged after they were attacked by a group of over 25 persons at Kajheri last night. Twelve persons, including three women, have been arrested in the case so far.

Sources said a police team had gone to Sector 52 to scrutinise the footage of CCTV cameras installed in the area to look for a clue to a snatching case.

The sources said they saw a person, Vikas, who was wanted in a case registered in Sector 36 a few months ago.

Inspector Naseeb Singh, SHO of the Sector 36 police station, said Vikas was going on a motorcycle when he was stopped and the police tried to arrest him.

The SHO said the accused pulled out a knife and tried to stab Sub-Inspector Om Parkash, in-charge of the Sector 61 police post, who tried to stop him, following which Om Parkash suffered an injury on his hand.

The accused then tried to escape from the spot. However, the police overpowered him. In the meantime, the mother of the accused and other family members gathered at the spot and started throwing stones at the police.

“Over 25 people gathered at the spot and attacked the police. They were armed with sharp weapons and sticks,” said a police source.

The SHO of the Sector 36 police station also suffered injuries on his hand. The mob also damaged two police vehicles.

The police informed the Police Control Room about the incident following which additional force was rushed to the spot.

While seven persons were arrested by the police last night, five were arrested today. Vikas, who was also injured in the incident, was hospitalised and will be arrested as soon he gets discharged.

A case under Sections 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from the discharge of his duty), 147 (rioting),148 (rioting armed with deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), 506 (criminal intimidation), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of a common intention) of the IPC, under Sections of the Arms Act and under Section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984, has been registered against the accused at the Sector 36 police station. The police said the matter was under investigation and more arrests would be made.

Nine cases against prime accused

The police claimed that the prime accused, Vikas, had nine cases, including those of burglary, theft and attempt to murder, registered against him in the city between 2005 and 2013.

Hotel vandalised

A hotel in Kajheri was also vandalised by the miscreants after the police took the accused inside the hotel when they were attacked by people. The miscreants also damaged the hotel owner’s vehicle as they thought it belonged to the police.
