Panchkula, January 25

A day after a five-day-old baby girl was abandoned by her parents at the Mansa Devi shrine, the Panchkula police arrested the couple here today.

The couple, both residents of Ram Darbar, had abandoned the child at the shrine at 9.24 am and then, in order to avoid suspicion, lodged a kidnap complaint at the Sector 17 police station. The woman was blessed with a baby girl on Monday. She delivered the baby at her house.

The couple, Kiran and Rakesh, already has a two-year-old daughter. Though investigations are on, preliminary investigations revealed the couple didn’t want a girl child, so they dumped her.
“After dumping the child, they went to Sector 17 police station in Chandigarh and complained that a woman, posing as a Good Samaritan, kidnapped their child from the GMSH-16 where they had gone for her check-up,” said a police official.
Kiran said while she was getting a card prepared, a woman in the queue said she would hold the baby for her. By the time they returned , she had fled with the child.
A CCTV camera at the shrine captured Kiran while she was dumping the child. The authorities concerned got calls from various persons who wanted to adopt the child. The baby has been admitted to the NICU at the General Hospital, Sector 6.
