A middle-aged Sikh couple entered a house in Sector 37 posing as a couple looking for a house on rent and robbed an elderly woman of her gold jewellery which she was wearing on Wednesday. The accused, before fleeing, tied the victim, who sustained injuries, and locked her inside a room.
The victim, Kamlesh Grover (66), who stays on the ground floor, was alone at home and was standing outside in the verandah when a man, wearing a turban, and a woman arrived outside the house on a white Activa scooter.
Since a “to let” board was put up on the first floor of the house, the couple told the victim that they wanted a house on rent. “The first and second floor of the house is vacant and the couple insisted on seeing the house,” said Ramnath Garg, the victim’s husband.
The victim went to the second floor with the couple, who took her into one of the rooms. “The accused gagged the victim and pulled her earrings and a gold chain which she was wearing,” he said.
The accused then tied the victim’s hands with her stole and escaped from the spot after bolting the door from outside.
Bhopal Singh, the victim’s immediate neighbour, said he heard a loud noise from the house following which he got suspicious and rushed to the victim’s house. “I went upstairs and found the door bolted from outside. I opened the door and found the victim injured,” he said.
In the meantime, another neighbour, Sanjeev, also rushed upstairs. The victim was then brought to the ground floor and the police were informed about the incident.
The police reached the spot and scrutinised the footage of CCTV cameras installed in the area. Sources said the police had recovered the CCTV footage in which both accused were seen riding an Activa scooter. The victim was taken to the GMSH, Sector 16. The victim received injuries on her face, ears and neck.
