A Special District Court here today sentenced Harbhinder Singh, alias Jalal, alleged CPI (Maoist) leader, to three years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him.

The police had arrested Jalal, alleged head of the CPI (Maoist), Punjab, in May 2011 from near Gharuan village while he was travelling in a bus. The police had seized arms and inflammatory printed material from his possession. He was sentenced under the Arms Act.

The police had alleged that his organisation had formed a five-member panel to spread Naxalism among educated and unemployed youth in the state. The police, however, could not find out who the members of the panel were and failed to make any more arrests.

The sentence was pronounced by the court of Tarntaran Singh Bindra, Additional District and Sessions Judge.

Jalal was released on a bond of Rs 50,000 and allowed one month to prefer an appeal.
