Mohali, December 19

In a rape case of a national-level kabaddi player, a Mohali court today acquitted Amarjit Singh Virk, the then chairman of the NRI Sabha, Mohali.

The Mohali Court of Special Judge, Archana Puri, acquitted Virk for lack of evidence against him in the case, said defence counsel Terminder Singh.

Virk was arrested by the Mohali police on January 29, 2012, after the registration of a case under Sections 376, 420, 506 of the IPC and the Arms Act against him on the complaint of the Patiala-based victim, a national-level kabaddi player, on July 13, 2011, at the local police station.

In her complaint, the victim had alleged that Virk raped her at gunpoint at Phase VII, Industrial Area, on July 13, 2011. She had also alleged that she had given him Rs 1.5 lakh for sending her abroad, but he neither sent her abroad nor returned the money. The defence counsel claimed that his client was falsely implicated under a conspiracy.
