Panchkula, April 11
The district police has failed to hunt down the gang which has been robbing the elderly after giving them lift in a car. In less than one month, two octogenarians have been robbed in a similar fashion in Panchkula, but there is no clue of the miscreants.
In a latest case reported on March 27, Nirmal Tandon, a resident of Sector 4, was targeted when she was coming back from a nearby temple on foot. The incident happened at around 1:30 pm when she had barley left the temple. On her way, two women, who were seated on the back seat of the car, offered her lift. The 80-year-old woman politely refused them. However, they took her stick and pulled her from her hand inside the car and closed the door of the vehicle.
“I was not wearing chain or earrings so I told them I have nothing. But, they snatched my two gold bangles worth around Rs 60, 000 before dropping me. I did not realise that the bangles had been taken away as there was no sensation at that point of time. It was only after I narrated the incident at home that I found them missing. Following which, we lodged a police complaint,” she recalled.
Earlier on March 19, the similar gang robbed Desh Raj Arora, a resident of Sector 9, of his gold kara after offering him lift in the car in broad-daylight at Sector 9. Though a case was registered, but no headway could be made by the police in this regard.
“Panchkula is becoming unsafe for old persons. It has been around 16 days when the incident took place but the police have failed to track down the miscreants,” feels Nirmal Tandon.
Meanwhile, Lalit Kumar, Station House Office of the Sector 5 police station, claimed, “We are making efforts. Similar cases have also been reported in Nabha and Patiala. The vehicles involved in the cases have been identified there and we are in touch with our counterparts there. We soon hope to make headway in this regard.”
