Patiala, March 5

The police have registered a case under various sections of the IPC against unknown cattle smugglers who opened fire at some self-styled cow vigilantes and escaped leaving the ferried cattle and a vehicle on the spot on the night of March 3. The police are on the prowl to arrest the accused, who were in two vehicles.

According to the police, Hondeep Sharma, General Secretary, Gau Sena Punjab, had lodged a complaint with the police that some unknown persons fired at them when they signalled them to stop their two vehicles.

“However, the accused started firing at the complainant and escaped from the spot in another vehicle, leaving behind a canter loaded with a cow and five bulls,” said the police.

The police have registered an FIR under Sections 307 of the IPC, various sections of the Arms Act, Section 11-A of the Animal Cruelty Act-1960 and Sections 4-A and 4-B of the Cows Slaughter Act-1955.

However, the police failed to answer as to how private persons were laying nakas and checking vehicles in the name of cow protection.
