Jail warder caught taking Rs 10K in bribe

Officials of Vigilance Bureau today arrested jail warder Manjit Singh (57) posted at Central Jail, Patiala, while accepting Rs 10,000 as bribe from a complainant. The complainant also alleged that she was sexually harassed by Manjit.

According to the complainant, her relative Harcharanvir Singh was lodged in Patiala Central Jail on the charges of domestic violence and was recently shifted to Patiala jail. The accused told the complainant that he will take care of Harcharanvir and would not beat him inside the jail if she fulfills his demand of Rs 3.5 lakhs.

“As per the deal, the complainant was asked to deposit Rs 1.5 lakh as first installment by May 10 while the rest of the amount was to be paid in June. Accused Manjit Singh demanded Rs 10,000 as token money following which we received a complaint and caught him red handed,” said Vigilance DSP KD Sharma. 

A case under Sections 452 (wrongful restraint), 354 (assault), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC has been registered against the accused in addition to various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
