NHRC issues notice to MC Commissioner

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Commissioner, Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, for providing information related to the death of sewermen in 2015.

The notice has been issued on the complaint filed by Advocate Pankaj Chandgothia.

Chandgothia said three labourers, who were working with a private contractor hired by the Municipal Corporation, died in 2015 after inhaling toxic gases on entering a 20-feet sewer chamber in front of the 3BRD Sewage Treatment Plant’s (STP) in the Industrial Area, Phase II, to clean it.

He said despite earlier notices, the MC had failed to give the reply to the Commission. Taking a serious view, the National Human Rights Commission issued the notice to the Commissioner directing him to submit the report within four weeks, failing which the Commission will be constrained to issue coercive process.
