Drab spaces under the Dera Bassi flyover will soon be transformed into corners of colour and art with the civic body approving a long-discussed beautification programme.

The plan, which had been under consideration for at least three months, was cleared by the MC authorities and the work will begin soon to improve the aesthetics of open spaces under the flyover.

According to sources, in the phase I of the project, the proposal includes making space for plantation, seating arrangements for the elderly, installing grills, sculpture and benches as key features of the project. While in the second phase, columns under the flyover will be painted creatively along with the graffiti work.

MLA NK Sharma inaugurated the beautification project under the Dera Bassi flyover. The entire work was undertaken to get rid of stink leading to unhealthy ambience and anti-social elements, including drug addicts and cattle menace.

Devinder Singh Grewal, Executive Officer, Dera Bassi, said: “The entire beautification project is expected to be completed at a cost of Rs 16 lakh as different themes and other innovation work would be initiated to make the place more appealing”.

The Dera Bassi Municipal Council had drawn a detailed action plan to remove encroachments and clean space in the next month. Suggestions and ideas from people of the area have been invited, the EO said.

“We have invited an expression of interest from NGOs and private parties to upgrade the look of flyovers to spruce them up and look aesthetically pleasant,” the EO said.

Officials hope that the beautification will complement the overall development that the area is witnessing.
