Doctorate for Speaker: Syndicate gives its nod

Syndicate unanimously cleared Doctorate of Laws (Honoris Causa) for Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan. Besides her, Prof Man Mohan Sharma, former Director of Institute of Chemical Technology, and Prof Tejinder Singh Virdee, from the Imperial College of London, have also been selected for DSc (Honoris Causa).

As per section 23 of the PU Act, PU Calendar Volume 1, 2007, the Vice Chancellor, two-third members of the Syndicate have to recommend for honorary degree and also it has to be supported by two-third members of the senate too. 

After this, the Chancellor approve the degrees too. 

Other personalities to be honoured

• Sumitra Mahajan belongs to the BJP and has represented Indore constituency of Madhya Pradesh since 1989. She did her MA and LLB from Indore University. She is the second woman MP after Meira Kumar to become the Lok Sabha Speaker.
• Prof Man Mohan Sharma did his PhD from Cambridge University in 1964 and became Professor at University of Bombay and later became Director of the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT), now Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT)-a deemed university. He served as the director for 33 years. 
• Prof Virdee teaches at the Imperial College of London. He is known for originating the concept and overseeing the construction of Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at Cern’s Large Hadron Collider with four other colleagues.

• Khel Ratna for legendary athlete Milkha Singh who was the only Indian athlete to win an individual athletics gold at a Commonwealth Games until Krishna Poonia won the discus gold at the 2010 Games. 
• Gian Ratna for Prof Emeritus BN Goswamy. Prof Goswamy is a prominent scholar in miniature painting. He received Padma Shri in 1998 and Padma Bhushan in 2008. 
• Udyog Ratna for Sunil Munjal, Chancellor of BML Munjal University. Munjal is joint managing director of Hero MotoCorp Ltd and Chairman of Hero Corporate Services Ltd. He had received Glob Scot Award from the Scottish government in September 2012.
