Chandigarh, May 24
The Centre has made e-way bills mandatory for the movement of goods exceeding the value of Rs 50,000 within the city. The e-way bill system will be implemented in the city from Friday.
Sources said a notification in this regard was issued recently. A buyer purchasing goods worth over Rs 50,000 will now be required to procure an e-way bill from the vendor. It is a document required for transportation of goods from one place to another on motorised vehicles. It will not be applicable in case goods are transported on conveyances such as rehri, rickshaw etc.
Ajay Jagga, an advocate, asked why should a GST assessee in a small city like Chandigarh, which has an area of 110 sq km, generate e-way bill for the intra-city movement of goods.
Earlier, the Centre had exempted the UT from the e-way bill system. Sources in the Excise Department said action would be taken against those violating the GST rules. — TNS
