CHANDIGARH: With the onset of winter and increase in arrival of fresh vegetables, prices of a majority of vegetables have been reduced substantially.

With the onset of winter and increase in arrival of fresh vegetables, prices of a majority of vegetables have been reduced substantially. On the one hand, green peas, which was being sold for more than Rs 150 per kg just 10 days ago was available at a mere Rs 50 per kg today in retail at the Sector 26 vegetable market.

Similarly, the prices of cauliflower and carrot have come down to Rs 20 from Rs 30, respectively. With the arrival of new crop of local potato, the prices of potatoes have come down and it is available at Rs 15 per kg only. Though the prices of onion still hover around Rs 30 per kg, the dealers said the prices was likely to further dip in the coming days as the fresh crop was ready to hit the markets.

Tomato, however, remained costly throughout the month and today its price was being quoted up to Rs 60.

On the other, the pulses continue to burn a big hole in the pocket of common man.

A survey of retail market revealed that arhar was being sold at any price between Rs 172 and Rs 190 per kg. In fact, all the three main pulses, moong, urad and masar are sold at more than Rs 100 per kg. Moong whole, urad whole and masar whole are being quoted at Rs 112, Rs 160 and 110, respectively.
