Awareness on noise pollution

Chandigarh:The National Initiative for Safe Sound organised a special programme for schoolchildren at Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, on Wednesday. UT Home Secretary Anurag Aggarwal presided over the function. About 300 schoolchildren and prominent citizens attended the function where an awareness talk about the health hazards of excessive honking and noise pollution was given by Dr Sarika Verma, state co-ordinator, NISS, Chandigarh. A special short film, "Shor" was also screened. Speaking on the occasion, Aggarwal took note of the adverse effects of noise and advised children to be alert about loud music and side-effects of honking. Dr Raman Abrol, chairman, NISS, Chandigarh, said they were working on noise measuring apps that would be popularised for easy implementation of noise laws.

Rally against plastic burning 

Chandigarh: A rally against the burning of plastic and leaves was organised by the Krishna Eco-Club at Government Model High School, Sector 20-D. Hundreds of students participated in the rally that was flagged off by headmistress Usha Kiran. The eco-club in-charge, Dr Shankar Mohan, informed the students that the burning of plastic and leaves was harmful for health and polluted air. Students also spoke on the need to protect the environment from further degradation. A rangoli competition was also organised.

Road safety programme

The Chandigarh Police conducted workshops at Mount Carmel School for Classes VII, VIII and IX to spread awareness about road safety. Students were shown a collection of films on safe driving practices and pedestrian safety. Movies on road safety were also screened.

Cultural visit to Chennai

A group of 21 students from Classes VI to VIII, accompanied by two teachers from Bhavan Vidyalaya, Chandigarh, went on a cultural trip to Chennai for six days. The trip was organised for the students learning Bharatnatyam at the school. They visited Kalakshetra, a renowned dance institution in Mahabalipuram. The students also attended a workshop where they were taught facial expressions and other intricacies of Bharatnatyam. 

Spell bee contest 

Panchkula: The Satluj Public School held the final round of a spell bee competition. Students from Classes V to X competed with each other. Vice-principal Reekrit was the quiz master. Principal Krit Serai said, “Students are appreciative of this yearly competition. They feel it is an interesting way to develop their vocabulary and spellings.” Ojal Sharma, Rizul, Vaishnavi and Arina stood first.

Chess championship 

An U-13 girls’ team from The British School, Panchkula, comprising Eivaksh Aggarwal of Class V, Krittika Garg, Natasha Peter, Garima Goyal and Smayra of Class VII and Soham Uppal of Class VIII won the gold  in the 8th District Chess Championship. Anshica and Archisha Reddy of Class VIII won the bronze. In the U-13 boys category, Akul Gupta of Class V, Samarvir Garg of Class VI and Ansh Gupta, Ruderansg Singh Pathania and Mohit Malik of Class VII won the bronze. In the U-7 boys’ category, Vayum Goel of Class I bagged the gold. TNS
