Born in 1956 at Badrukhan village of Sangrur, Tarsem Lal Gupta, in-charge, Academics, at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NS-NIS), Patiala, retired on May 31 after 38 years’ of fruitful career. 

Apart from heading the academics wing, Gupta also served as the coach of the Indian team for a long period. Having done his graduation from Ranbir College, Sangrur, Gupta was an All-India Inter-University champion and did his NIS diploma in 1977. 

On the completion of his diploma course, he joined the National Institute of Sports, Hyderabad on March 27, 1978. He later did postgraduation from Germany and joined the Indian team as a coach for different junior and senior Asian boxing championships.

He was also the coach of the Indian team for the preparations for the Atlanta and Sydney Olympics. He has also been coaching the Indian team for President Cup, China Cup and many other International Tournaments before joining as the in charge academics at NIS, Patiala. — TNS
