Research scholars may present synopsis through Skype at PU

Soon research scholars enrolled at Panjab University may be able to present their synopsis through Skype before the research degree committee (RDC).

A proposal of the PU physics department in this regard will be tabled before the Syndicate on May 1. In the proposal, the chairperson of the department will seek permission for two students working in Fermilab, USA, to present their synopsis through videoconferencing (Skype). The students, who are working on an international project in collaboration with an institute in the USA, after completing their pre-PhD work and submitting their synopsis, will have to stay at the site of the experimentation in the USA.

The students-Daisy Kalra and Jyoti Tripathi-had sought permission to present their synopsis through Skype in January.  Department chairperson Devinder Mehta said they had submitted their request to the authorities and if allowed, cases of 20 other students working on various projects in other countries would also be sent to the authorities for approval.

He said if allowed, it may lead to the formulation of a policy in this regard, which would immensely benefit a large number of research scholars working on various projects abroad.   

Prof OP Katare, Director, research promotion cell, PU, said if the Syndicate approveed this request, then the cell would start drafting a policy in this regard.
