Under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Panjab University installed one sanitary napkin vending machine and two La-Femme care bins for the collection and disposal of sanitary waste at the AC Joshi Library of the PU here today.
The machine has been installed on a one-month trial basis for free of cost with the cooperation of the Librarian, Dr Raj Kumar Gupta, and chief executive officer (CEO), Washroom Hygiene Concepts Pvt Ltd, Delhi, Sudha Chakrapani.
After inserting a coin of Rs 5, the machine would dispense one sanitary napkin.
“More such sanitary napkin vending machines and bins will be installed at girls’ hostels and various department and centres of the PU after the successful trial at the main library,” said Prof Seema Kapoor, PU Coordinator, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
The unique sanitary waste disposal unit and liner system incorporates innovative, EPA-approved Silver Ion technology, which significantly enhances the elimination of harmful bacteria and malodours from the washroom. The system provides collection, removal and responsible disposal of sanitary waste.
It is the latest patented technology of Biomaster, UK, which provides round-the-clock protection against bacterial build-up from harmful species like EColi giving a safe, effective and permanent antimicrobial protection. This system aims at providing clean and hygienic away from home washrooms.
Prof Seema Kapoor said girls and women staff present in the library at the time of the installation were overwhelmed to see such an initiative by the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan team of the PU and the excitement reflected on their faces.
