Patiala: In his presidential address at the inaugural session of the three-day UNESCO-supported capacity building workshop on the media and information literacy for youth and youth-led organisations, Dr AS Chawla, Dean, Research, Punjabi University, said the media and information literacy (MIL) skills were necessary for promoting the use of knowledge for learning and research.



Patiala: In his presidential address at the inaugural session of the three-day UNESCO-supported capacity building workshop on the media and information literacy for youth and youth-led organisations, Dr AS Chawla, Dean, Research, Punjabi University, said the media and information literacy (MIL) skills were necessary for promoting the use of knowledge for learning and research. “Teachers should encourage students to be more inquisitive. There are many gaps and divides, hence an MIL policy and guidelines are needed to bridge these gaps,” he said.  Dr Jagdish Arora, Director, Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre, Gandhinagar, was the chief guest on this occasion. In his inaugural address, he emphasised that e-Shodh Sindhu provided access to electronic resources, including more than 10,000 journals and 15 online databases to 25 universities, 66 centrally-funded technical institutions and 4,000 colleges. He acquainted the audience about e-learning initiatives taken by the UGC and the Ministry of Human Resource Development where the INFLIBNET was responsible for technical collaboration. These e-learning initiatives include e-PG Pathshala, Swayam, and Swayam Prabha. Dr Dilara Begum, Associate Professor and Chairperson, Department of Information Studies and Library Management, East West University, Dhaka (Bangladesh), was the guest of honour .— TNS
