An elderly couple was killed while one person suffered injuries in a road accident in Samana town of the district this morning.

The Swift Dzire car in which they were travelling in rammed into a parked tractor-trailer on the Samana Patran road around 6.30 am.

The couple died on the spot, while the car driver suffered serious injuries. Passers-by took the car driver to a private hospital.

The impact of the accident was so intense that the couple died on the spot, said a passer-by.

According to the police, the deceased have been identified as 65-year-old Tarsem Chand and his wife Sunita Rani, 62, residents of Ghagga village near Samana. The car driver has been identified as Major Ram, a resident of Kulbani village, Samana.

The police said body of one of the deceased was badly mutilated in the mishap. The couple was on their way to Patiala for health check-up.

Investigating Officer Baljeet Singh said the tractor-trailer was wrongly parked on the road, which resulted in the accident.

The officer said: “We have registered a case against the unidentified driver of the tractor-trailer and started investigations. We will record the statement of the car driver after his condition improves.” Baljeet said the accident might have occurred due to smog.

A case has been registered against the driver of the tractor-trailer under Section 304-A, 283, 337 and 338 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Samana City police station.
