Finally, paid parking system abolished in Mohali

Finally, the demand of the local residents and most of the Mohali Municipal Corporation councillors has been met with the MC House giving its nod to abolition of the paid parking system in the town. 

In today’s MC House meeting, Mohali Mayor Kulwant Singh announced the end of the paid parking system in the town. He heard suggestions from all councillors on the reintroduction of the system with much modification later.  

“The paid parking system has come to an end today,” announced the Mayor at the House meeting, which lasted for around two hours at MC Bhawan in Sector 68 here. 

“We will reintroduce the system later but with much modification. We are contemplating charging not a single penny for the first two hours for using parking lots when the system is reintroduced,” said Kulwant Singh while stressing the need for ‘managed parking lots’ in the town for the convenience of the residents and as well as safety of vehicles. 

Most of the councillors supported the Mayor’s idea.

Another crucial issue, which the House passed at today’s meeting, was of filling 328 posts of ‘safai sewaks’. It was also one of the main demands of the ‘safai sewaks’ during their recent strike early this month.   

However, the Akali-BJP  councillors showed dissent on passing of the issue, claiming that if the posts are filled, the MC would have to bear a burden of Rs 7 crore annually. 

Asking for special meeting between selected Akali-BJP councillors, the Mayor and the commissioner on the issue before passing it, BB Maini, senior Akali councillor, suggested the House to check all legalities in the matter.  The meeting also witnessed a ruckus as the Congress and Akali-BJP councillors were seen levelling allegations and counter-allegations over interference of each other.
