A month after the firing incident was reported near the cricket stadium roundabout in Sector 16 that left one person injured, the UT police claimed to have arrested the two assailants in an attempt to murder case.

The police arrested two accused identified as Sarabjit Singh, aka Rocky, and Manpreet Singh, and presented them in court that remanded them in six-day police custody. A total of four assailants had escaped to Nepal with their girlfriends after the incident. The remaining two assailants are still absconding.

On the intervening night of October 24 and 25, Deepak Saini, a Mohali resident, had gone to a discotheque in Sector 8 with his girlfriend. At about 1.30 am he came out of the Disco with her and was driving in their jeep when the four accused, namely Lucky, Rocky, Ranjit and Manpreet stopped the two near the Cricket Stadium Chowk. The four then threatened him, demanded money, then Rocky, took out a fire arm from Lucky and fired a shot at him which missed the target. Then Rocky took another weapon from Manpreet and shot at Deepak Saini injuring him.

The police said after committing the crime, the above said accused switched off their mobile phones and left for Amritsar and from Amritsar they went to Ambala and thereafter to Delhi. From Delhi they left for Nepal along with their girlfriends, one of them belongs to Nepal. Their locations were not detected and as they were using only whatsapp for communication.

Sources claimed the presence of assailants in Nepal was established through the record of their bank accounts, which revealed that Rocky and Manpreet had operated their accounts on the Nepal-Bihar border. Though the girlfriends of Ranjit and Lakhwinder had joined them later, Rocky’s girlfriend is a permanent resident of Nepal.

The initial interrogation of the accused revealed that two country made pistols were used in the crime and two bullets were fired at Deepak, who was returning from the discotheque along with his girlfriend. The sources said the first bullet missed the target and then the assailants fired the second bullet, which injured Deepak near Sector 22. The victim was returning from Score discotheque in Sector 8.
