Four arrested with over Rs 1 cr in old currency

The Mohali police arrested four persons along with over Rs 1 crore in old currency at a naka in Sohana here.

The accused have been identified as Prabhjot Singh from Jhuner (Sangrur), Ram Singh from Koop Kalan (Sangrur), Gagandeep Multani from Malerkotla (Sangrur) and Ramit Kumar from Patiala.

Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Singh Chahal said the accused were travelling in an i10 car (PB 13AS 8109) and were intercepted at the naka. “The old currency notes had been kept in a haversack. The notes belonged to Ram Singh, who, along with a person from Uttar Pradesh, had invested in a property at some place in UP. His acquaintance from UP had provided him the old currency to get it exchanged,” said the SSP. 

Of the total notes, 8,700 were of Rs 1,000 denomination and 3,200 notes of Rs 500 denomination, said the police.

The police have registered a case under Sections 420 and 188 of the IPC and Section 5 of the Cessation of Liabilities Act, 2017, at Sohana village. 

The police have intimated officials of the Income Tax and Enforcement departments in this regard.
