A 23-year-old girl, a student of Dr Ambedkar Institute of Hotel Management, Catering and Nutrition, Sector 42, reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself at the hostel today after allegedly being harassed by a youth, who was a former student of the college.

The police have booked the youth, who had posted an objectionable picture of the victim on her relative's account. The youth's father has also been booked by the police. The victim has been identified as Abhijit Kaur, a BSc third-year student of the college. She was found hanging in her hostel room by her friends.

The police were informed about the suicide around 1 pm. Inspector Ram Dayal, SHO of the Sector 36 police station, said the youth had been identified as Mohammed Nishad, a resident of Chandigarh who was a senior of the victim.

The victim and the accused were known to each other. “Investigations have revealed that the accused used to harass the victim by calling her on the mobile phone and sending messages to her,” the SHO said.

The SHO said the youth had also sent an objectionable photograph of the victim to her family.  The police said these incidents forced the victim to take the extreme step.

The call detail record of the victim’s mobile phone is being scrutinised by the police. “We have taken the victim's mobile phone in possession, which is being scrutinised. The email of the victim will also be checked,” the SHO said.

Sources said Aneesh Ansari, father of the youth, had also been booked. “Around a month ago, the victim had approached the police with a complaint that the youth was harassing her following which Ansari had assured that his son would mend his ways,” the police said.

The victim’s family was informed about the incident. The body has been kept at the mortuary of a hospital and the autopsy will be conducted tomorrow.

The father-son duo has been booked under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC at the Sector 36 police station.
