As a relief for the MBBS aspirants in the city, the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, will seek the permission for increasing the MBBS seats from 100 to 150.

Sources said Home-cum-Health Secretary Anurag Aggarwal had directed Dr AK Janmeja, Director-cum-Principal of the Medical College, to start the process for seeking permission to increase the MBBS seats.

Aggarwal said the GMCH was well equipped to add more seats in the college.

The college has witnessed expansion in the past few years, with recently added buildings and infrastructure. While the two new blocks have come in Sector 32, there is plan to construct residential colony and hostels in Sector 48.

The Department of Architect has already finalised the drawings for the project.

The college started with 50 seats in 1992. It acquired 50 more seats four years ago, with the approval of the Medical Council of India (MCI).

The nod for council is required for increasing the seats. A parent of a student said due to limited numbers of the seats in the city, students had to opt for the other colleges.

The college has recently got approval for two super-specialty departments and has recently started MD courses in many subjects.
