GMSSS-22 beat Carmel girls, enter semifinals

CHANDIGARH:Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS), Sector 22, registered a one-goal victory over Carmel Convent School, Sector 9, to reach the semifinals of the girls' U-17 inter-school football championship here.

Chandigarh, August 20 

Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS), Sector 22, registered a one-goal victory over Carmel Convent School, Sector 9, to reach the semifinals of the girls' U-17 inter-school football championship here. 

After playing a goalless first half, GMSSS-22, girls struck early in the second half to take a decisive lead; Honey finding the back of the net in the 32nd minute of the match.  The side then held on to the slender lead to ensure a place in the last-four stage of the competition. 

In the second quarterfinal match, Vivek High School, Sector 38, overcame Government Model High School (GMHS), Sector 20, 3-2. After playing a 1-1 draw in the stipulated 60 minutes, the match was decided on penalties. Amodini drew the first blood for Vivek High in the 21st minute, but Monika helped GMHS, Sector 20, drew level in the 46th minute.In the penalty shootout, Ashmeet and Mehal scored for Vivek High, while only Khushboo could convert for Government High Schoool,Sector 20. 

Verinda propels

St. Joseph's school 

A brace by Verinda, meanwhile, helped St. Joseph's School, Sector 44, beat St. Xavier's School, Sector 44, 3-0. Verinda scored the first goal in the 3rd minute and followed it with another strike in the 26th minute. Niharika then extended the lead for St. Joseph's in the 32nd minute and ensured the side a place in the semifinals. Saupin's School, Sector 32, registered a 4-3 victory over Sacred Heart School, Sector 26. The match was decided on penalties after both sides could not break the deadlock in the stipulated time.  Khooshi, Sarakshi, Jaskirat and Muskan scored for the Saupin's school. 

St. John’s boys win

Meanwhile in the boys’ U-17 category, St. John’s School, Sector 26, defeated Strawberry Fields High School, Sector 26, by a solitary goal. Gurnoor scored the only goal of the match in the 15th minute.
