Review mandatory solar panel move

RAJEEV PRAKASH:As a senior citizen, I agree with and second the opinion expressed in these columns by a resident that installation of solar panels on rooftops of houses should not be mandatory.

As a senior citizen, I agree with and second the opinion expressed in these columns by a resident that installation of solar panels on rooftops of houses should not be mandatory. A 1-kWp solar photovoltaic panel on a one-kanal house costs Rs 75,000. Officials of the MC and the UT Administration do not reply to the emails sent on addresses given on the official websites. The decision to make installation of solar power panels madatory needs a review since a majority of residents cannot afford it. Will the authorities listen?

Compassion takes a back seat

On my way back from Ludhiana on a bus the other day, I witnessed an incident that has been etched into my memory. Two women boarded the bus and one of them was holding a baby. There was a seat near mine where three passengers could have been seated comfortably. Two persons occupied the entire space on the seat and one of them was apparently not ready to move a bit to make space for the woman holding a baby to sit. I could not stop myself from requesting him to adjust a bit for the woman with a baby. The incident showed how compassion and kindness has taken a back seat today. How often do we extend a helping hand? A kind stranger cements the faith in humanity. A small gesture can make a difference. Life is short; make it worthwhile by cultivating compassion.

Complete Zirakpur-Patiala flyover before imposing toll tax

Four-laning of the Zirakpur-Patiala highway is under way for quite some time now. The construction of flyover near Banur is a big hurdle for motorists. The traffic is diverted on both sides of under-construction flyover. These roads are broken, thereby hitting the flow of traffic and resulting in frequent traffic jams. The authorities are likely to introduce toll tax at two places on this highway from coming March even as the flyover stretch near Banur is nowhere near completion. Toll tax should be imposed on motorists only after the work on the stretch in Banur is completed and opened to traffic.
