Chandigarh, March 26

The Panjab University Senate today approved a 2 per cent fee hike for hostel inmates from the next academic session (2017-18) for all types of hostels. For the first time, the university has introduced a hostel development fund and each student will have to pay Rs 750 per semester to the university.

A decision was taken that 25 per cent of the daily charges which students pay as part of the fee and fines will go to the hostel development fund.

According to the fresh guidelines, the students will pay their fee semester-wise. At present, they pay their hostel fee either monthly or annually to the university.

The students will have to deposit the fee in two instalments — the first instalment for the July-December period and the second for the January-June period. No relief has been given to research scholars as they have to pay the hostel room charges of Rs 5,000 per month on a monthly basis.
